October 2016 - Garden of Quilts show review and preparation
Quilt Show Review: Genny Applebee, Diane Grayson, Pam Kidd and Chairs
What a fun meeting! Chairperson, Marci, had asked members to wear something for Halloween. She thought it would liven up the meeting and it did.
Genny, Pam and Diane performed a skit explaining just how the show quilts should be bagged, labeled, and checked in. Then each Chair of the various show area explained their area and volunteer duties. Bags for show quilts, along with instructions on where and how each show submission is to be hung were given our to each member that will be presenting quilts. The skit the ladies did at the beginning of the meeting was very clear and so much fun; they did a great job! There were, of course, lots of snacks; some sweet and some healthy. A great and fun meeting for all members and members' guests! |

May 2016 - Over-Dying
~ Presented by our Chairman, Marci Meyer
Have you ever looked at your stash and thought "What the heck? Why do I have all of these fabrics with nothing to go with them? Or maybe you bought a beautiful fabric you fell in love with because of it's unusual color but then you can't find anything to match it.
Marci uses good old Rit dyes and warns that you must follow the directions for the best results. Can use in a washer that has agitating but not in front-loaders. You will need to clean your machine. Also works well in a good sized tubs; size depends on how much fabric you plan to dye. Also remember that your fabric(s) must be wet when dying. Sizing does not matter but do wear rubber gloves! She used a teal and a brown to over-dye the selected fabrics and chose the teal batch to make the beautiful bag she displayed.
Over Dye the fabrics together and you will find that the results are amazing. What an ingenious and fantastic way to use up your stash. What it creates is a custom line of fabrics that even though they have different hues and intensity, they work amazingly well together. View gallery here...

The Chino Chicks friendship group shared their Hawaiian Quilts with us. Liz Hart showed us how simple we can make a Hawaiian Quilt. If you remember making paper snowflakes, you can make a design for a Hawaiian quilt. These quilts can be hand appliqued, machine appliqued, or raw edge appliqued. As Liz reminded us, it's our quilt and we can do as we wish. The highlight was when Liz shared a large square quilt borrowed from Barbara Sweeney. Barbara had purchased it in Hawaii and it is in the traditional snowflake style center medallion of hibiscus flowers. It is really large with an amazing border.

There were 4 superb entries for the "Honey I shrunk the Quilt" chairperson's challenge. Each one is unique and beyond beautiful. By all accounts, it was very difficult to pick just one as a favorite. Unfortunately there were only 3 prizes to be awarded. Our Chairperson, Genny Applebee, hand crafted the amazingly beautiful hand stitched and beaded prize ribbons.

The Comfort Quilt Committee once again headed a fantastic Sew-In. They brought a beautiful quilt called Falling Charms. The sample quilt was done in batiks, green and white and is a simple square and strip block. Sew 4 of these blocks in their various colors and then set them into a big 4 patch and voila! The blocks go together so quickly and the resulting quilt tops are beautiful.
The Comfort Quilt Committee had lots of kits set up for the Falling Charms quilt and previous comfort quilt kits were available as well.
There were snacks to fuel the quilters until lunch which was pizza. Thank you Carol Branch for collecting the funds and making the pizza run. Thank you also goes to the Comfort Quilt Committee for the lovely green salad with lots of trimmings.
