Half Square Triangles - Quick & Easy

half square triangle - new method Picture
Cheri demonstrated the Carla's Kits method for making half square triangles.
While working on their own Frolic mystery quilts, Cheri and friends have discovered a quick and accurate way to make half square triangles.

A little magic happens when you sew together  your sized  and color specific strips into  one long (as long as you like) piece.   After sewing, you begin to cut 45  degree angle strips from the long sewn-together piece. You will see from the video in the link we have provided just how it all comes together and what a great time saving method this is.

February 2020 - Mystery Quilt, "Frolic," Progress

This month Cheri displayed several of the  blocks she has made and talked about her progress.

Participants have been attending meetings at the Library and at Cheri's home to learn, teach and share.  Everyone has been excited to see how much progress each has made. The meetings have provided true mentoring.  Whether a member just started, in the middle or up-to-date on the quilt lessons, Cheri will be within a phone call to help.

Frolic Reveal

And. . . the final reveal of Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville mystery quilt; Frolic.

By now members that signed up to participate in the "Frolic" mystery quilt are well on there way and very anxious to see the final reveal.  Our journey started last November when Cheri introduced the idea of a group  mystery quilt at our guild meeting.  We were given the option of beginning right away or simply printing the instructional clues for later.

Cheri presented a plethora of fabric colors beautifully laid out to entice everyone to sign up.  She even had paint chips representing the Quiltvilles suggested colors to be used for the pattern. Those that signed up were given a set of the suggested color chips. Cheri was delighted when so many members signed up.

Cheri Heinecke noted that we had a number of new members who were new to quilting and/or sewing. As a new quilter, Cheri benefited from Bonnie Hunter’s teaching. Cheri has decided to encourage our members to participate in Bonnie Hunter’s 2019 mystery quilt,  called "Frolic."

She explained how to sign up and get the information, which is online at Bonnie's website. Every Friday, new instruction is published to make the quilt. Cheri suggested swatch colors for the quilt but said other colors could be used, as long as tone is considered.

Cheri hopes to get a room at the Chino Library where members can come and work on the quilt on a weekly basis.

This month Cheri showed a great Fall table runner.  It uses all the colors of Fall so it does double duty; beautiful on the table and uses up lots of scraps. Get your Cornbread & Beans Quilting free pattern here.

She also showed how Bootleg Spray starch really helps when you are ironing your blocks. Did you pick up a copy of how you can "bootleg" your own?  No? Well here it is.
BOOTLEGGERS' SPRAY STARCH
Mix 1 part any kind of vodka with 8 parts water. The cheap stuff works just fine, unless you plan on drinking the leftover. Place in a spray bottle, label and shake to mix. Use distilled water if you normally use distilled water."

Three Sewing Tips & Tricks from Cheri

9/10/2019

1. In September, Cheri Heinecke  demonstrated a new way to rip those seams quickly using an eyebrow trimmer.

2. She also gave us a great tip using microfiber cloths.  When laundering  new fabrics, toss in a microfiber cloth or two and watch it collect loose threads.  Use it in regular laundry, too, because quilters always have lots of loose threads hanging around.

3. Her third suggestion was to apply "Nexcare" medical tape to the backs of our  rulers. The tape texture holds on to fabric so it will not slip.  Better than those "bumpy" little plastic stick-ems!

At this month's general meeting  several members were shown how to make the "plarn," made from plastic shopping bags and used in making the sleeping mats for our  military veterans who are struggling with housing and homelessness. The sleeping mats are in conjunction with the StandDown Allaince program being featured this year.

Susan Joy demonstrated how truly easy it is to create an Anita's Arrowhead Block quilt.  From a simple block comes this magical quilt.  Sew 2 squares face-to-face, cut into pieces, rearrange and watch the magic happen! Susan Joy also supplied the link at Quilting Daily to download, here.

    2019 - 2020 Mentor's Table mentor Cheri Heinike.
One member volunteers to staff a Mentors Table at our monthly meeting to demonstrate fun and new quilt-making techniques. Mentors learn  shortcuts, tips and tricks, and  more, then share this knowledge with other quilters when we meet.   Mentoring is a volunteer position that runs for one to two years (term is up to the volunteer).   If you're interested in serving as a mentor, let us know!
Did you know: when you visit the Mentor's Table, you might win a little prize, get a free pattern or pick up a recipe.  Be sure to stop by -- even just to  visit.
