2019 Community Project: Plarn sleeping mats

5/1/2019

Marci Meyer talked about the Plarn (plastic bag yarn) sleeping mats (4 ft. x 6 ft.) which will be our community project for the next year. Members are encouraged to gather plastic bags as they shop since each mat is made from 400 bags.  The bags are cut into 2" strips and connected end-to-end creating a ball of Plarn (think yarn ball). Wal-Mart at Gail Gardner will provide 40 large bags every month and Marci is contacting more stores.

Gloria Gillis suggested we contact assisted living facilities to see if the residents would be willing to help out by crocheting mats. Gloria will contact some facilities to see if this is a possibility.

During the break Marci demonstrated how to cut and fold the plastic bags, tie them together and form the large balls of Plarn that will be used to crochet mats. Afterwards, several members crafted the Plarn strips and balls while other members sewed on the Stand Down quilt tops.

It takes lots of time, so we are starting this project now. If you care to help, learn how to change your 2" strips of plastic bag material into sleeping mats by watching videos here. . ., here. . . or here. . .

Yavapai County Stand Down Program2019

5/1/2019

This year, the Chino Valley Quilters is proud to work with the Arizona Veterans Stand Down program. The program  targets veterans who may be dealing with housing issues including homelessness.

They also provide a range of services, e.g., medical, dental, clothing and etc.  The services are provided to them over a two day event in September.

Arizona Veterans Stand Down Alliance

OUR GOAL: To raise awareness of the issue of homelessness among veterans while teaching agencies how to collaborate throughout the year and end homelessness among veterans.
'Stand Down' is a military term that refers to the brief period of time given to a soldier to leave an active combat area in order to rest and regain strength before returning to battle.
A StandDown event or resource fair: is a community-based event in which organizations come together to provide annual one to three day events to serve veterans and their families who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness, and connecting them with critical supportive services to help them gain and maintain housing stability.

Chino Valley Quilters Stand Down Quilt Pattern
CVQ members: here is the pattern we will be using at our June Sew-In.  "Copy" and paste to a blank Word page, then print.

***Important note. . . at the meeting we learned that the pattern needs to be adjusted:

Cutting shows print fat quarter to be 18" square but should be 20" square

Cutting shows background fabric cut (4) 18" sqrs. and (4) 17.5" sqrs. but should be cut 20 1/2"  for the star points.
