Critter Comforts are special pillow projects made for animals sheltered at the Chino Valley Humane Society.
The initiative is led by Chino Valley Quilters member Phyllis Henley, who stumbled upon a website article about a Phoenix woman making dog pillows for local animal shelters. She kept the idea in the back of her mind and, when her own beloved Labrador passed away, decided to visit the Chino Valley Animal Shelter. The poor, furry babies had nothing but cement to sleep on, at best thin towels or blankets. She made 12 pillows for them.
In early 2013, she brought the project to her Friendship Group, Stitchin’ Sisters, and they made another 13 pillows. Over the next six months, she lost two more dogs of her own but kept making comfort pillows for the shelter animals.
This projects looks to be one with ongoing demand, as the animals like to chew, shake and scratch their pillows to make them more comfortable, or just to play. The Chino Valley Quilters and Mountain Top Quilters Guild (based in Prescott) provide fabric scraps and batting for the stuffing, plus heavier fabric for the outside of the pillows. The shelter has large washers, so all pillows are made to be washable.

Donate fabric, thread, or other sewing materials!
Need to clear a path through the sewing room? No room left in the garage for the car? We'll gladly take your fabric scraps, thread, batting and other sewing supplies and put them to good use.
Chino Valley Quilters members create quilts for many community-support projects, often donating their own fabric and materials in addition to their time. Because there is ongoing need for Comfort Quilts and other donations, we always need materials. We also accept financial donations toward purchase of these supplies.
